REGISTRATION UNDER
THE PODIATRISTS ACT 1989
Section 6 of
the Podiatrists Act provides that persons who prove to the satisfaction of the Board that
they are of good character and aged of 20 years may be entitled to be registered if:-
- 1(a) they have completed the prescribed course of training
and passed the examinations determined by the Board as sufficient to qualify them to
practice podiatry; or
- 1(b) they have completed the course of training conducted by
and received the diploma of the Australian Podiatry Association (NSW); or
- 1(c) they hold a diploma or a certificate of competency in
podiatry obtained by examination after a course of study and training from a body,
association or institution recognised by the Board.
RECOGNISED DIPLOMAS/CERTIFICATES
For the purposes of section 6 (1)(c) of the Act the
diplomas/certificates recognised by the Board are as follows.
Australia
- Diploma of Chiropody awarded by the NSW College of Chiropody.
- Associate Diploma in Chiropody/Podiatry awarded by Sydney
Technical College.
- Diploma of Health Science (Podiatry) awarded by Sydney
Technical College.
- Diploma of Health Science (Podiatry) awarded by Sydney
Institute of Technology.
- Diploma in Chiropody awarded by the Australian Chiropody
Association (Victoria).
- Diploma of Applied Science (Chiropody/Podiatry) awarded by
Lincoln Institute of Health Science.
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by Lincoln
Institute of Health Sciences.
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by La Trobe
University.
- Bachelor of Podiatry awarded by La Trobe University.
- Advanced Certificate in Chiropody awarded by the South
Australian Institute of Technology.
- Diploma in Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by the South
Australian Institute of Technology.
- Diploma of Applied Science - Podiatry awarded by the
University of South Australia.
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by the
University of South Australia.
- Diploma in Chiropody awarded by the Western Australian
Institute of Technology.
- Diploma in Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by the Western
Australian Institute of Technology.
- Diploma in Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by Curtin
University of Technology.
- Diploma in Chiropody awarded by the Queensland Institute of
Technology.
- Diploma of Applied Science (Chiropody/Podiatry) awarded by the
Queensland Institute of Technology.
- Diploma of Applied Science (Podiatry) awarded by the
Queensland University of Technology.
- Bachelor of Applied Science - Podiatry awarded by Queensland
University of Technology.
Overseas
Persons who completed courses in chiropody/podiatry overseas
are required to successfully complete the examination conducted by the Australian Podiatry
Council, on behalf of the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR), in order
to become eligible for registration.

Reciprocity
Persons who hold diplomas/certificates that are not
recognised by the Board who were registered in another State or Territory of Australia
prior to 1 March 1993 may apply for registration.
Applicants are required to submit the following documents in
addition to those requested in the application form:
- Evidence of initial and current registration in the other
State or Territory.

Provisional registration may be granted by the President of
the Board upon application, provided all documentary requirements are in order.
Provisional registration enables applicants to commence practice immediately and is
usually granted until the next scheduled meeting of the Board following the application.
Applicants must not assume that provisional registration will be granted and must
wait for advice of approval before commencing practice. The Board usually meets to
consider applications on the third Wednesday of each month.
